International Fine Dining

The Bali of today is famous for many things; its plethora of culinary exigencies being one, and certain names stand out from the many choices now found on this darling little island – Gado Gado having been established in the 80’s as the leading nightclub, right on the beach of Legian. At the turn of the century, heralding a new direction, Gado Gado became a restaurant and bar, which presently has an unparalleled beachfront dining position, straight over golden sands onto and over the spectacular Indian Ocean. This is tropical seamless dining, sea-breeze kissed straight from the fresh, crashing surf, shaded from the day by mature trees with indoor dining as a choice when the occasional patter of gentle rain falls, under a traditional style Balinese roof.

The Gado Gado experience starts well under the very same at its long bar, stool pulled up to enjoy a cocktail or two (think Rose Martini or a Champagne Kir Royale), to move onto the wooden-decking exterior to relax on the plumped-cushion comfy sofa and watch the ‘beach life’ pass by. The staff are delightfully charming, with Indonesian’s, Russian’s, Spanish, Malaysian and Dutch rubbing shoulders to provide superlative hospitality teamwork, and the famous smiles that Bali is known for.

Ready to move to your table, anyone of them would be delighted to discuss your culinary preferences from Dutch Chef Quirjin’s (better known as Quib to those in the know) menu, the most charming of men with a passion for his creations. Now at Gado Gado for over two years he still continues to surpass each menu’s addition, drawing on his particular blend of classical European cuisine with an infused modern touch.

Noticeably, he infuses an island flavour into his dishes using local ingredients and fruits to delicious effect. For example, to start ‘the slow cooked jumbo prawns with honey melon, aloe vera, passion fruit and lemon grass highlights the fruity theme as do ‘the marinated scallops with mango, tomato, basil, crispy foccacia’ and basil mayonnaise topped with bright, edible flowers’. The seared ‘foie gras with fig compote, French toast and herb salad’ is a signature Gado Gado entrée. Moving to mains, you might want to try ‘grilled Wagyu striploin with roesti, sweet onion compote, green salad and veal jus’ (can be served for two as well), ‘grilled sea-bass with potato gratin, asparagus, snow peas, shimeji mushrooms and béarnaise sauce’, or perhaps the ‘roasted duck breast with sweet and sour beetroot, rhubarb compote, confit of the leg and veal jus with Sechuan pepper’, or a vegetarian choice of ‘homemade mushroom raviolis’ or a ‘tian of fresh grilled vegetables with goat cheese, tomato confit, capers and kalamata olives’. It’s all amazingly presented, and as equally delicious ~ and surprising well priced ranging between Rp 65,000 – Rp. 350,000 (for two).

This August Chef Quib will be introducing his menu degustation of four-courses for Rp. 350,000++, of which the maitre D will be able to suggest appropriate wine pairing from a remarkable international selection. The meal is beautifully finished, under the stars, with the signature ‘chocolate melted cake’, a digestive, or coffee liqueur, and a stroll along the beachfront. Perfect for ‘mimpi manis’ or rather, sweet Balinese dreams.
