As both resident DJ and Creative Director, it falls upon Donni One to craft sets that capture the shifting collage of experiences that makes KU DE TA unique. With more than 20 years’ experience as a vanguard DJ in Australia’s house scene, he’s perfectly placed to do just that.
Donni’s love of eclectic music led him to take up residence at KU DE TA Bali in 2003, first as resident DJ and then as Creative Director. From down tempo, jazz and lounge grooves, deep house cuts, right through to essential dance floor selections, Donni’s sound is perfectly synchronized with the setting. 2004 saw Donni’s sun rising as he embarked on the first KU DE TA High Season Events calendar.
His work to build and nurture the program - now in its 6th year - has resulted in one of the world’s most anticipated music events. In 2006, Donni released the first in a series of Sunset Soundtracks Compilations. Now in its 4th volume, the release is a special double CD compilation, comprising a sunset mix and a classics house mix to be released in 2010. By 2007, he had conceptualised and launched KDT RADIO, providing a much-needed voice for KU DE TA’s musical aspirations. The show is aired weekly throughout Bali on 98.5 Beat Radio Plus, in Australia on the digital radio network Koffee and online via www.KUDETA.net.
On the global circuit, 2009 saw Donni embark on a European tour covering Moscow, Supperclub Amsterdam, and Naples Italy with the Angels of Love to finish off the year in the Middle East. Donni oversees all things creative at KU DE TA and as Branding Manager, is responsible for in-house Collateral and Ad Design, Website Design, KDT Magazine Design and Content Manager, Video Coordination / Interviews and Event Concepts for all KU DE TA on site and off site events – he’s truly not just a pretty face!
This High Season at KU DE TA, all through the month of August, is in full celebratory swing, with Donni One’s creative input of the famed Bikini Day Party on Sunday the eighth, which is also a family day, but does get packed, with thumping vibes making the whole crowd move as one. Dress code to this, is, Flesh Code. Moving onto Saturday the fourteenth is KDT’s 10th anniversary celebration, with the UK’s Brand New Heavies playing live to get revelers way into the mood with their particular brand of acid jazz and funk.
Who can forget such tunes as ‘Dream on Dreamer’, just perfect for KU DE TA’s beachfront setting on dreamy Bali. Then it’s time to get all white for the annual White Party, on Saturday the twenty-first, which Donni One has themed on sexy Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, around all that is Egyptian – even walking and dancing like one the night away.
The following weekend brings it down a mellow notch to the encore sounds of world band Tijuana Cartel on Saturday the twenty-eighth of August, to end this amazing season marking KU DE TA’s 10th year, and into another fun-filled decade. As the brand name blatantly expresses, Renegade Republic is a design house made for those who are not afraid of who they are, who dare to express their individuality through eye-captivating clothing; by colourful fabric patterns or bold design cuts, nothing is lost through the talents of creator Marita Daniell. A Bali based creative, Marita has called the colourful island her home during the past decade, with intermittent global trips to spice up her eye of what makes the client of Renegade Republic tick. She started the line by exclusive collections and production for others, which were enormously received to positive praise, in Indonesia as well as her homeland of Australia.
Realising a potential for cutting edge styles Marita opened her first store on well-known, busy Jalan Legian in downtown Kuta two years ago. The collections literally flew off the shelves, and before she knew it she was bringing out four collections per annum, and expanding into wholesale across Indonesia, Australia as well as trendy Europe, where artsy, unconventional apparel is the norm. The collection extended into women’s’ and men’s wear, accessorized with shoes, bags, and sandals (for the gals) – for younger adult wearers to those who dare or can get away with it (think fashionable cougars, sorry guys, no category for you – albeit think the Brad Pitts and George Clooneys).
The second store was soon to follow opening on fashionable Jalan Oberoi, which has become an active main street of Seminyak comprising brand name designer boutiques, world-class restaurants and famous Ku De Ta beachside restaurant and world event venue. Renegade Republic was once again the centre of it all and setting the scene. Marita today focuses on two to three major collections per year, to which she adds to as she progresses on a permissive creative bent. Now highlighting T-shirts and Shirts for the men’s collection, in light cottons and cotton rayon jersey to compliment the tropical climate, with heavier fabrics coming into play for export orders, she does not overlook the important size factor which caters up to XXXL.
The women’s collection is broader (pun aside) compromising of skirts and dresses – maxi, mini, off the one-shoulder neo punk minis, short plunge halter necks, or figure clinging Baby-T cut above the knees – in delicious fruity colours of crushed strawberries, tie die crushed blueberries, or freshly cut green, as well as leather jackets (the a-symmetrical fitted zipped is a particular favourite), pants (think silk cargo peddle pushers, great combo), the wispiest short shorts, and Renegade Republics’ famous motif T-shirts and tops.
These all look fabulous teamed up with the ankle boots, or sandals, with a little clutch bag to add a glamorous look – this is some serious glammed up goth-grunge, straight out of any fashion shoot from a international magazine not to be named!
